Hello everyone! All partied out or still raring to go this Jubilee weekend?!
I thought I would go a bit ‘zen’ today….an antidote to all the mad red white and blue that it everywhere!
An assemblage (or diorama, never quite sure whether something is a diorama or not…..!)…..
Low Tide Along The Breakwater..
A very natural, sun bleached-style piece that is actually very easy to put together. Here’s how…
Take a large paper mache book box, and remove the ‘lid’ or front cover. Don’t bin it as I’m sure it will come in handy for something else.
Using Mod Podge, cover parts of it in tissue text paper….
You don’t need to do all of it, this text will only show through here and there anyway! Whilst you’re waiting for it to dry, you can get on with the wood parts…. Cover the wood with a wash of white paint. You don’t want a solid opaque white, so add some water and sponge on lightly…
As its very watery, the paint dries quickly, but you could blast with a heat gun if you want! Next, take the straight driftwood sticks and make a breakwater from them….. sounds tricky, but its not! Using a hot glue gun, adhere the sticks to a piece of sturdy chipboard, then tie string around them. This is the string the box of sticks came wrapped in..use everything!
Don’t worry about all that messy glue showing, we’ll hide it later… Once your gluey tissue has dried on the box, paint it white. I’ve done this roughly to give a sort of natural look rather than a uniform opaque appearance. When the paint is dry, glue in the breakwater…
At this point, glue the three small planks to the base of the box…
For the large driftwood accent on the top, wrap with rusty wire and twist to secure, like this…
Poke holes in the top of your box, then push the wire through. I bent the wire back on itself once through the top, so it stays in place.
(you can’t see the wire as I then put tissue over the ends, then painted the tissue to blend in with the box!)
Now all that remains is to add the extra details. Moss was used to mimic seaweed, and (mainly!) to hide the glue at the base of the breakwater..
I also added some seaglass, shells and a starfish..
Lastly, I added my title, computer generated then simply stuck on.
And there we have it…..a calming, beach themed driftwood assemblage, all ready for the return of summer!!!
